What Could Be Causing My Low Water Pressure?

Many families have switched to WaterSense plumbing fixtures in their Niceville, FL homes to save water. A low-flow showerhead with this label can save the average family 2,900 gallons of water every year. However, there’s a difference between using low-flow fixtures and having low water pressure. There are a few possible causes of inadequate water flow depending on your situation.

Poor Flow Only While Using Hot Water or a Specific Fixture

A decrease in water pressure while you use hot water could be a problem with your water heater. The shut-off valve may be partially closed, so all you have to do is open it the rest of the way. If that’s not the issue, then you need a plumber to determine the problem.

When you have weak water pressure from only one showerhead or sink faucet, there could be mineral buildup inside. You can take off the fixture and clean the aerator and screen with a small toothbrush.

Another possibility in a showerhead is a clogged nozzle. You can remove and soak the fixture in a mixture of water and vinegar to remove the mineral buildup. If neither of these solutions work, you might need to replace the fixture.

Low Water Pressure Across Your Whole House

Having weak water pressure in your house might be the same issue that others in your neighborhood have. This means that the pressure from the main water supply is inadequate, but you can install a booster to increase water flow.

A reducing valve could also be the cause if you purchased a pre-owned home. The previous owner may have added the equipment to reduce water flow. You can ask a plumber to adjust the setting. Also, check that the main shut-off valve is completely open.

If you rule out these potential causes, you could have a leak in the mainline. You might be able to tell by looking for water in your garage, basement or yard where the main and local supply lines meet. In this case, you will need a plumber to repipe that part of your plumbing system.
