Signs You May Need a New Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals are one of the most reliable kitchen appliances you can own in your Panama City, FL home. Most problems can be fixed by turning off the power and hitting the reset button, but even the trustiest disposal will eventually need to be replaced. Here are some signs that it’s time for a new unit:

Water Leaks

Water leaks can be an early sign that you need a garbage disposal replacement. Over time, the inner components and drain connectors can deteriorate allowing water to seep through. At first, it may be just a slow drip, but the leak will eventually increase until water pools under the sink. If not repaired or replaced, even small leaks can cause significant damage to your kitchen cabinets and flooring.

Unusual Noises

Even when they’re operating normally, garbage disposals are noisy. Turn it on with a metal spoon in the drain and your ears will be immediately assaulted by an even louder clattering sound. New noises, especially if it sounds like metal on metal, can be a sign you’ll soon need a garbage disposal replacement. First, look for any obvious obstructions in the mouth of the disposal near the blades. Always make sure the power is turned off at the circuit breaker before you put your hand inside the disposal. Next, try the reset button. If the noises continue, your garbage disposal may be near the end of its life.

Needs Frequent Resets

The reset button is your best friend when you have a problem with your garbage disposal, but you should rarely need to use it if your unit is functioning properly. Overloading the disposal, clogging it up, or jamming the blades are the most common reasons for resets. Disposals that must be reset with each use are usually close to aging out. Loose wires can also cause frequent resets. A plumber can troubleshoot this problem and let you know whether you need a repair or a new garbage disposal installation.
